LANCASTER, Ohio -- Ohio University's Lancaster Campus announced that a communications scholarship has been established in honor of Scott Shepherd, the late director of student services at the Lancaster Campus.
The scholarship will aid students enrolled in the College of Communication with special consideration given to applicants with disabilities. According to Pat Fox, enrollment manager at the Lancaster Campus and chair of the campus scholarship committee, the scholarship will be awarded for the first time in spring 2004.
Shepherd taught interpersonal communication during his 24 years at the Lancaster Campus and his support of Ohio University course offerings at Pickerington High School were instrumental in the development of Ohio University's Pickerington Center.
"Scott Shepherd was a friend of and advocate for students of all ages at the Lancaster Campus," said John Furlow, interim dean at the Lancaster Campus. "Through his excellent communication skills and commitment to academic quality, he advised countless numbers of students during his long career. A scholarship in his name is a perfect way to remember an administrator who believed in providing opportunities for students to achieve their potential and fulfill their dreams."
Shepherd was active on the local and state levels in education and awareness of disability and accessibility issues. In addition to serving on the Ohio Rehabilitation Service Commission, he was a member of the Governor's Council on People with Disabilities. He served on the boards of The Center for Disabilities and Cerebral Palsy and Hospice of Fairfield County. In 1989, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio University Alumni Association, Fairfield County Chapter.
