Greg Shepherd named interim dean of Ohio University College of Communication

ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 16, 2004) -- Gregory J. Shepherd, Ph.D., has been named interim dean of the College of Communication at Ohio University, effective Aug. 23, for a one-year appointment. Shepherd is currently the director of the School of Communication Studies within the college.

Gregory Shepherd"When we elevated Kathy Krendl to the interim provost position, it was very important for us to continue having a strong leader for the college," Ohio University President Roderick McDavis said. "I am very confident in Greg's ability to provide the college with direction and purpose while Kathy serves our university in her new capacity. He's a gifted educator and we're fortunate to be able to turn to him to fill this critical role."

As dean, Shepherd will provide leadership for the college's five schools -- the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, the J.W. McClure School of Communication Systems Management, the School of Communication Studies, the School of Telecommunications and the School of Visual Communication -- and the Telecommunications Center.

"I look forward to the opportunities associated with assuming this key role within the college," said Shepherd. "In accepting this responsibility, I'm aware of the challenges that lie ahead, but certainly heartened by the quality of our faculty, students and staff and I'm determined to not merely maintain our quality of education and reputation, but to advance them."

Prior to joining Ohio University, Shepherd was an assistant professor at the University of Iowa from 1983 to 1989 and an assistant and associate professor at the University of Kansas from 1989 to 2001.

Shepherd received a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Illinois, a master's degree in speech communication from Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor's degree in speech communication from the University of Minnesota.

Should the occasion arise during the coming year, Shepherd will have the opportunity to apply for the permanent dean's position.
