Paul Bibbins named Ohio University Eastern Campus dean

ATHENS, Ohio (April 29, 2004) -- Paul E. Bibbins Jr. has been named dean of Ohio University's Eastern Campus in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He will begin his new duties on July 1.

Paul BibbinsBibbins, 57, is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of biology at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky. He will replace Assistant Vice President for Regional Higher Education Bill Willan, who became interim dean of the Eastern Campus last summer.

"I am excited that Paul Bibbins will be the next dean of Ohio University's Eastern Campus," said Ohio University Vice President for Regional Higher Education Charles Bird. "He has terrific experience and great enthusiasm, and I am confident that he will be an excellent leader on campus and in the community."

Bibbins served as interim president at Kentucky State University from June 20, 2002, to Dec. 31, 2002. During that time, he provided leadership for the campus' 2,300 students and 550 employees. During his tenure, he developed a university-wide impact plan to upgrade academic programs and develop state and federal governmental partnerships.

In his current role, he is responsible for the daily management of the College of Arts and Sciences and its policies, and for promoting excellence in research, instruction and service. He also is responsible for development, fundraising and research activities, student and faculty recruitment and retention, as well as long-term fiscal planning for the college.

"I'm both excited and ready to take on this challenge at this time in my career," Bibbins said. "This position will keep me involved with faculty, staff and students and that is what I like most. I particularly enjoy working with students who don't think they can graduate from college and guiding them through school until they walk across that stage at graduation. Helping students realize their goals and potential is what gives me the most pleasure, and as dean of the Eastern Campus, I will have many opportunities to experience that feeling."

Before working at Kentucky State, Bibbins was a cytogeneticist/andrologist and research associate at the University of Texas Medical Branch from 1982 to 1986 and a genetics research associate and instructor at Eastern Virginia Medical School from 1976 to 1979. He served as a cytogeneticist/certified medical technologist at Norfolk General Hospital from 1973 to 1976 and as a clinical laboratory technician at Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital from 1971 to 1973.

He is a member of numerous professional organizations and has participated in several postdoctoral educational programs at Hampton University, Harvard University and the University of Louisville. He also has authored many articles and abstracts, presented multiple research papers and received numerous awards.

Bibbins earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from Virginia State University in 1970 and 1971, respectively. He earned his doctorate in biomedical sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School/Old Dominion University in 1986. He and his wife, Betty, have one child.

Ohio University Eastern Campus is located in St. Clairsville, Ohio, has an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students, and offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs.
