Chances are Athens businesses will be busier than usual this weekend as moms travel to Ohio University for the annual Moms Weekend from Friday, April 30, through Sunday, May 2. Here are just a few activities offered on campus and in town guaranteed to keep everyone entertained.
Former host of "The View," Lisa Ling, who is currently on "National Geographic Ultimate Explorer," will speak about her experiences in the media and about the role her mother has played as an influence on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
Students and their moms can spend time together through physical activity at campus venues such as the Ping Recreation Center, the University's recently renovated golf course or the indoor and outdoor tennis courts. And if playing sports isn't on the agenda, moms can help students cheer on the baseball team at Bob Wren Stadium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday or the track team at Goldsberry Track on Saturday. In addition, Ohio University President Robert Glidden and his wife, Rene, will host a coffee from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at their residence, 29 Park Place. All students, their mothers and other guests are encouraged to attend.
For those interested in the arts, several artists have exhibits on campus throughout the weekend. Visit Dustin Ogdin's sculpture exhibit at the Trisolini Gallery, Mike Demers and Stacey Wittek's display of painting and photography at the University's Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall or Fred Harris' watercolors, Japanese Sumi paintings and Gregory Barsamian's kinetic sculptures at the Kennedy Museum of Art and the museum's Contemporary Print Collection: Print Tapestries?Poem Wedding Dress and A Word Made Flesh?Throat, both by artist Lesley Dill also on display at its education gallery.
The family weekend also brings several weekend-specific fundraising events. Students and their moms can enjoy Athens' scenery while supporting a great cause through the 4th annual Moms Walk for a Cure on Saturday at 10 a.m. The run/walk 5K supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation. And proceeds at the School of Music Benefit Dinner at the First United Methodist Church on Friday at 7 p.m. go to the March of Dimes and the School of Music's touring ensembles. The church also will host the Moms Weekend Choral Concert featuring the University Singers, Women's Choral and the Singing Men of Ohio on Saturday at 4 p.m.
