Jean Lewis named interim director of undergraduate admissions

ATHENS, Ohio (March 30, 2004) -- Jean Lewis has been named interim director of undergraduate admissions effective May 1. She will replace Norman "Kip" Howard who resigned his position as assistant vice president for enrollment services/director of undergraduate admissions effective April 30 to accept the position of assistant vice provost for enrollment management at the University of South Carolina.

A search committee chaired by College of Arts and Sciences Dean Leslie Flemming has been formed to fill Howard's position. The committee's goal is to name a replacement in May with a start date in July.

"The committee is looking for a forward thinking individual with a strong commitment to academic excellence and diversity," Fleming said.

Lewis, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., was hired as assistant director for operations in Ohio University's Office for Undergraduate Admissions in 1998 and was responsible for the office's application and prospect processing. In 1999, she was promoted to the position of associate director for operations and was given the added responsibility of overseeing the technology and publications functions.

While in admissions, she was a team leader in the development of the online applications status check, online information request form, online campus visit registration and the internal/external Web staff pages. She also was instrumental in the purchase and implementation of Recruitment Plus, the recruiting software that enables a structured communication flow for admitted and prospective students.

In 1990, Lewis began her Ohio University career in Computer Services as a systems support specialist, where she provided training to faculty and staff for the first University-wide e-mail system, ALL-IN-1. From 1995 to 1998, she served as the training and customer support coordinator. Before Ohio University, Lewis worked for the Southeastern Ohio Voluntary Education Cooperative (SEOVEC) and the Athens City Schools.

Lewis earned a master's degree in higher education administration in 1997 and a bachelor's degree in interpersonal communication in 1995 from Ohio University. In 1982, she received an associate's degree in applied business in computer science technology from Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Howard, who has more than 35 years of experience in college admissions and enrollment management, has spent the past 13 years at Ohio University. He began his tenure as director of undergraduate admissions before being promoted to assistant vice president for enrollment services in 2000. He was presented an Ohio University Outstanding Administrator Award in 2000.

Prior to joining Ohio University in 1991, Howard worked in admissions and enrollment management at Muskingum College, the University of North Carolina at Asheville, the University of Denver, Case Western Reserve University and Ohio State University. He has held offices in numerous professional organizations and served as the state of Ohio's ACT representative for five years. In that role, he served on numerous task forces and committees.

In addition to his admissions duties, he has managed budgets in excess of $2.1 million and provided leadership in the incorporation of Web technologies in admissions programs.
