Student blogger needs online votes to make finals

Ohio University sophomore broadcast journalism major Grant Burkhardt is one of five semi-finalists in an online student blogger contest to win an all-expense paid trip to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, in February.

To win the Microsoft Office-sponsored contest, Burkhardt must make the finals by finishing among the top three vote getters at the contest Web site located at www.officewintergames.com/vote.aspx*. Microsoft executives will then select the grand prize winner from the three finalists. The site is also hosting an online contest for women bloggers.

Burkhardt said the blogger competition came around at the perfect time because he had been trying to secure an internship at the 2010 Winter Olympics for the past two years.
"To blog at the Winter Olympics would be incredible," Burkhardt said. "My goal is to become a sportswriter, so to cover one of the greatest sports spectacles in the world would enhance my resume and be a wonderful learning opportunity."

Contest voting is free and open to the public through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29. Voters can log in at the site using a Facebook account or a valid e-mail address and password.

The grand prize winner will blog at the Olympics from Feb. 11 to Feb. 17 or Feb. 23 to March 1. The winner receives an Olympics press pass, round trip airfare, six-night hotel stay, $1,100 transportation stipend and a $100 per day per diem for seven days.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Burkhardt is a sports reporter for WOUB-TV and maintains his blog "A Brighter Look." The blog can be found at www.grburkhardt.blogspot.com/* or by clicking on his name at the contest site.
