Apr 19, 2010
From staff reports

Ohio University will host Pre-Law Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the Baker University Center.

The event includes speakers, panels, and a law school admissions fair and is designed to foster a better understanding of careers in the legal profession and the place that law has in our society. More than 20 OHIO alumni with law degrees are expected to attend the event.

Daniel Bernstine, president and CEO of the Law School Admissions Council, will give the keynote address at 9 a.m. He previously served as president of Portland State University for 10 years and dean of the law school at the University of Wisconsin.

Mark Godsey, director of the University of Cincinnati College Of Law's Ohio Innocence Project, will lead a presentation about the group's work at 10 a.m. The OIP identifies inmates in Ohio prisons who are innocent of the crimes they were convicted of committing
and diligently works to free them from prison.

Clarence Elkins, who was exonerated in 2005 of murder, attempted murder and rape charges, will share his story during the event. His story has been told by CNN and other major media outlets and is the subject for an award-winning 2009 documentary titled "Conviction: The True Story of Clarence Elkins."

During the afternoon, panel sessions will be held on an assortment of topics such as women in law, ethics in law, and practical career advice for future lawyers. The final event is a law admissions fair.

All events are free and open to the public. Students are encouraged to sign up for a few or all of the events they would like to attend. To preregister for the event, which is advised, or to see a full schedule of all events, visit the Pre-Law Day Web site.

Pre-Law Day is sponsored by Phi Alpha Delta, The College of Arts and Sciences, University Programs Council, and the Student Affairs Commission of Student Senate.
