'Face to Face' - A book debut and signing at the Kennedy Museum of Art

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 19, 2004) -- Last spring "Face to Face," an exhibition of Lloyd E. Moore photographs, accompanied by a video installation, was first presented at the Kennedy Museum of Art, in Athens, Ohio. The exhibition generated great interest and resulted in a book of Moore's photographs and stories.

The book "Face to Face," will debut with a book signing on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kennedy Museum of Art. Edited by Ohio University Eminent Scholar Rajko Grlic and published by Erlewine Design, "Face to Face" is a stunning array of Moore's work spanning more than thirty years. Both Grlic and Moore will be available to sign books.

The subject of the book is the life work of Lloyd E. Moore, a lifetime resident of the area. Moore spent his career as a lawyer in the small Appalachian river town of Ironton, Ohio. Throughout his career, he was a passionate photographer, documenting his clients, friends and co-workers. His collected photographs form a unique and extremely valuable document of people living in Southeast Ohio during the second half of the 20th century. One hundred photographs were selected for the book from among 15,000 images, accompanied with short stories about the people pictured in them.

The goal of this project was to develop a combined exhibition and publication of photographs and related stories, as a model for presenting and preserving local artworks and history. We hope such a project will also inspire other unknown and unrecognized artists, historians and researchers of everyday life to continue their work in preserving everyday reality for the future.

The book was published through the generosity of the Ohio University Baker Fund Award, the College of Fine Arts Creative Research Award and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

The book will be on sale with a 30 percent discount at this book signing. Simultaneously, the Web site -- face-to-face-photos.com -- will be launched with more information about Lloyd Moore and examples of his photography. Copies of the book are also available through this Web site.
