Ohio University to celebrate Founders Day on Feb. 18

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's 200th birthday celebration really takes the cake with Founders Day festivities that are sure to be remembered for the next 200 years. A giant birthday cake and an Ohio University multimedia piece will highlight the celebration on Feb. 18. The festivities will reflect on the University's past, present and future with a commemorative gathering and the world premiere of "Turning Two Hundred."

The day begins with an opportunity for patrons to enjoy a slice of birthday cake while reminiscing about Ohio University with past presidents, dignitaries and other special guests. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the rotunda of Ohio University's new classroom facility on West Green. The Feb. 18 celebration continues in the evening with the world premiere of "Turning Two Hundred," a signature bicentennial event at 8 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The historic performance includes sights and sounds featuring an original score by Mark Phillips, composer and professor of composition and electronic music, whose works have been performed around the world. It will also feature live dance performances choreographed by Lisa Ford Moulton, associate professor of dance, whose original works have been performed in venues across the nation; and video segments highlighting two centuries of Ohio University history and tradition.

The evening event also includes a presentation of two Founders Citations, the University's highest honor as bestowed by its board of trustees. Admission to both events is free and open to the public.

Established in 1804, Ohio University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Ohio and the first in the Northwest Territory. To learn more about Ohio University's bicentennial, visit www.ohio.edu/bicentennial.
