Term extended for interim HHS dean

Sep 9, 2009
From staff reports

Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit announced Friday that she is extending the term of College of Health and Human Services interim Dean Randy Leite for an additional year. Leite began serving as interim dean on July 1, 2009, following the retirement of Dean Gary Neiman. Originally, Leite's appointment was to run through June 30, 2010; it will now conclude June 30, 2011.

Benoit decided to ask Leite to remain in his role for a total of two years after conversations with HHS school directors and a faculty advisory committee that was formed in the spring by Executive Vice President and Provost Kathy Krendl to help select an interim dean.

"Work is continuing on the formation of an academic health center and a re-envisioning of the college,'' Benoit said. "Mounting a dean's search during the current academic year before these processes are completed would be difficult."

Leite joined HHS in 2008 as the associate dean for academic affairs. Before his arrival at Ohio University, Leite served as the director of the Institute for Child and Family Policy and was an associate professor in human development and family studies at Bowling Green State University.

"The directors and members of the faculty advisory committee view Randy as an able leader capable of guiding the college during a period of transition that includes not only academic restructuring but also the transition to semesters and the advent of a B.S.N. degree for the Athens campus," Benoit said. "What I heard from faculty and the leadership of the college confirmed the impression that I had formed of Randy's leadership. I am grateful that he was willing to extend his term of service for a second year."

Leite agreed that keeping continuity in the dean's office would help the college to stay focused on its current priorities.

"I am pleased to be of service to the College of Health and Human Services during a period of great challenges and opportunities,'' he said. "I appreciate Provost Benoit's interest in the college and look forward to working with her and our own faculty and staff to continue to move our programs forward."
