Governor's office to fill trustee positions

May 13, 2008
By Alison Wayner

Three positions on the Ohio University Board of Trustees -- those of two voting members and one student member -- are in the process of being filled by Gov. Ted Strickland's office.

C. David Snyder, whose term expired this month, has held one of those positions for the past nine years. Snyder, a 1974 graduate of Ohio University and currently chair of Snyder International Brewing Group in Cleveland, was appointed to the board in 1999.

The second position is that of Scott P. Borgemenke, who informed board Chair Daniel DeLawder of his intention to resign from the board April 22. Board Secretary Tom Davis received official notification of the resignation from the governor's office late last week.

Boregemenke resigned his position as chief of staff to Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted in January to accept a position with Magna Entertainment Corp. He said the demands and travel associated with the job also make it impossible for him to fulfill his obligations as an Ohio University trustee.

Borgemenke, who began his term in 2006, is a 1990 graduate of Ohio University. The governor's office will fill the unexpired portion of the term, which ends in 2015.

The governor's office also will replace Student Trustee Lydia Gerthoffer, whose two-year term ended this spring. Five candidates for the position recently were interviewed by a member of the Ohio Boards and Commissions Office, part of Strickland's office that appoints members to various boards throughout Ohio.

Davis said he is hopeful new appointees will be in place in time to attend the board's next meeting June 26-27.

The governor's office appoints members of the Board of Trustees with the consent of the Ohio Senate. The board consists of nine voting members, two non-voting national trustees, two non-voting student trustees and a representative from the Ohio University Alumni Association.

All nine voting members must be Ohio residents, five of whom must be Ohio University graduates, and serve nine-year terms. The two national trustees are distinguished out-of-state Ohio University graduates who serve terms not to exceed two and three years, respectively. The two student trustees serve staggered two-year terms.
