A word of appreciation from President McDavis

Jun 4, 2008

More than 250 faculty and staff enjoyed an opportunity to catch up with one another and hear brief remarks from President Roderick J. McDavis during today's Spring Appreciation Reception. In an e-mail communication afterward, the president shared the following recap of the 2007-08 academic year.

Dear Ohio University Faculty and Staff:

Another wonderful and successful academic year is rapidly drawing to a close.  In fact, one could say this was an historic year for our great University. Let me share a few highlights:

  • Our students earned 69 nationally and internationally competitive awards, a record for our University.

  • Our graduation rate performance indicator is ranked fourth in the nation among public universities, according to U.S. News and World Report.

  • More than 550 student projects were presented at this year's Student Research and Creative Activity Expo, our largest showcase to date.

  • Students moved into Adams Hall, our first new residence hall in more than 30 years.

  • We finalized the Five Year Vision OHIO Implementation Plan and now will begin to implement Year One of that plan.

  • We broke ground on the new state-of-the-art Academic and Research Center, which will transform the way students and faculty teach and discover. And it is the first building to be constructed primarily with private funds since Cutler Hall was built in 1819.

  • In January, we learned that Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ generously bequeathed a conservatively estimated $80 million in securities and real estate to the Ohio University Foundation for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.

  • Steve and Barbara Schoonover's generous gift of $7.5 million toward the new home for the Scripps College of Communication -- The Schoonover Center for Communication -- is the single largest cash gift our University has ever received from a living alumnus.

All of this and much more was accomplished this academic year because of your commitment to go above and beyond the call of duty. It was the professor who regularly made time outside of office hours to ensure that a student struggling in a course was not left behind; the administrative assistant who ensured that a paperwork glitch did not affect a student's ability to enroll in a class; the assistant dean who encouraged a student to try something that initially seemed impossible and then supported her every step of the way; the custodian who took time to give encouragement to a homesick first-year student; and the administrator who dedicated time to mentor a student.

It is your contribution each and every day that adds value to an Ohio University education and fosters a community spirit that makes our University unique. Thank you for all you do for our beloved Ohio University community!
