ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2006) -- Ohio University will host the Honors Orchestra Festival Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8, in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
Now in its fourth year, this festival honors top high school string players from the state of Ohio and surrounding regions. The young musicians will join with the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra to perform a challenging orchestral repertoire. Director of Orchestras Steven Huang will be conducting.
High school participants have the opportunity to work with university faculty in sectionals (where sections of the orchestra practice) and master classes (where all musicians watch and listen as a master instructs one student at a time). Participants will also learn about Ohio University and its School of Music.
The program includes Schumann's Third Symphony and Barber's Violin Concerto, with 2006 Student Soloist Competition winner Heather Kufchak.
Kufchak is a sophomore at Ohio University, where she is studying violin performance with Assistant Professor of Music Marjorie Bagley. Kufchak began playing violin at age four. A Chamber Music Connection Fellowship alumna, she has competed in the semifinals of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition with her group, Trio Riendo. She currently performs with the Ohio Valley Symphony.
Kufchak's previous teachers include Jim McCullough and Michael Davis. The concert is free and open to the public. For further information call the School of Music at 593-4244.
