ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2006) -- Ohio University Dean of Lifelong Learning Thomas Shostak has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2007.
As dean, he oversees the areas of Independent and Distance Learning, Conference Services, Ohio University Without Boundaries, Summer Sessions/Winter Intersession, Hong Kong and International Outreach, and the Ohio University Online Learning Program.
Shostak also holds an appointment as an assistant professor of counseling and higher education in the College of Education.
"Being dean of Lifelong Learning has been an extremely rewarding experience for me. I have not only been blessed with a fantastic staff and a supportive administration, but I have also had the opportunity to deliver to adults and non-traditional learners something I truly believe in," Shostak said.
A native of Norwalk, Conn., Shostak began his stint at Ohio University in November 1996. Prior to that he served as an associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of Central Florida, where, from 1987 to 1991, he supervised all off-campus credit programs. From 1991 until 1996, he served as director of continuing education.
Before his tenure at UCF, Shostak was an academic administrator at Palm Beach Community College in Florida and at Rockland Community College in New York. Prior to that he was a faculty member and department chair at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey.
"We appreciate Tom's outstanding service to the university and we especially appreciate his contributions to Lifelong Learning," said Ohio University Vice President of University Outreach and Regional Campuses Charlie Bird. "I will consult with my staff members and collect their thoughts and opinions before conducting a search for a replacement."
Shostak has a doctorate in educational leadership from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master's degree in student development from Michigan State University and a bachelor's degree in English from Cornell University.
