ATHENS, Ohio (March 30, 2007) -- An Ohio University student was taken by helicopter to a Columbus hospital after she was struck by an Athens County recycling vehicle on campus. Her condition is not known at this time, but the Ohio University Police Department says she suffered trauma to her lower body when a county vehicle struck her.
Misato Kawamura, 19, of Kasugai, Japan, is enrolled in the Ohio Program for Intensive English. This is her first quarter at Ohio University.
OUPD said Kawamura was hit by a truck backing up a service drive toward the College Green between Ellis Hall and Alden Library. The truck is operated by the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District. Kawamura was stabilized at O'Bleness Hospital in Athens and then taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
"The safety of every Ohio University student is of our utmost concern," said Terry Hogan, Dean of Students. "We will closely monitor the situation as we keep Miss Kawamura's family informed and support those who know her on campus."
The International Student and Faculty Services office is assisting and an Ohio University translator is with the student.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and OUPD continue to investigate. Park Place at University Terrace was closed to traffic for about two hours, but has been reopened.
