Haven't found time to pick up your new Ohio University ID card? Easy access to the many services of University Libraries and Campus Recreation might be just the motivation you need.
The Office of Information Technology is overseeing the conversion to the new cards, which have updated designs and -- for security purposes -- no longer carry Social Security numbers on the magnetic stripe. Instead, Ohio University personal identification numbers, or PIDs, are printed on the new ID cards.
Campus Recreation is completing the conversion of its computerized card readers from Social Security numbers to PIDs today, said Rita LaValley, director of marketing and technology for the Ping Student Recreation Center.
LaValley said Campus Rec is asking patrons to have their ID cards by Sunday, July 1, for entry to the Ping Center, the Aquatics Center and the Ohio University Golf Course. Patrons who have not yet obtained their new ID cards should know their PID number as it provides a quick means of identification, she said.
Campus Rec uses the ID cards to identify currently enrolled students and confirm the status of faculty and staff. Students enrolled this summer have access to the Ping Center and Aquatic Center and are eligible for reduced greens fees at the golf course. Faculty and staff may pay the daily admission fee or purchase a membership to Ping, the Aquatic Center or the golf course.
Meanwhile, University Libraries last week began requiring that faculty, staff and students use PIDs rather than Social Security numbers for many services, said Wanda Weinberg, head of the Reference and Instruction Department. PIDs are now used to access electronic reserves; to make book requests from OhioLINK, the Alden Library Annex or other Ohio University campuses; and to "View Your Library Account" for renewing books or checking the status of OhioLINK requests, Weinberg said. By fall quarter, faculty, staff and students must have a new ID card to check out library materials, she added.
Individuals can look up their PIDs online by visiting https://portal.finance.ohiou.edu/mypid.
Athens Campus students and employees can pick up new cards in HDL Center 154 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Arrangements vary on the regional campuses, and students and employees should contact recarding locations for specific details.
Students and employees who will be away during the summer can obtain new cards when they return in the fall.
