Updated identification cards hit Athens campus today

June 18, 2007

By Anita Martin

--Today employees and students on the Athens campus can begin picking up new identification cards. The new cards do not contain social security numbers.

To receive a new card, go to 154 HDL Center (off of West Union Street) during regular business hours. There is no charge for employees or students to obtain an updated card. Students and employees away from campus during the summer can get their updated cards upon returning to campus in the fall.

Incoming students will receive their ID cards during Precollege Orientation.

When picking up a new university ID card, returning students and employees must bring their old ID cards. Individuals new to campus and those who cannot locate their old cards must bring a driver's license or another official photo ID, such as a passport.

Because the holder's Social Security number is encoded on the magnetic stripe of current cards, OIT will collect and shred old cards when holders receive their new ones.

The updated cards feature a new design, but cardholders can elect to a reuse photos already on record . The front of the new ID card includes the holder's name and photo, university status and a nine-digit PID (personal identification) number. The back of the card includes a magnetic stripe for use in campus readers and a unique, computer-generated 16-digit ISO number.

Ohio University ID cards are used for a wide range of services, including Alden Library check-out; Ping Center, Aquatic Center, and Bird Arena memberships; Bobcat Cash at vending machines and campus convenience stores; student access to sporting events; student meal plans; building access in some locations; and faculty/staff e-mail activation and password resets.

Rollout of the new ID design coincides with the elimination of Social Security numbers from the Alden Library and Ping Center computer systems.  "With new cards being issued to everyone, this was the perfect time to transition Alden and Ping away from using Social Security numbers," says Chief Information Officer Brice Bible.

The Office of Information Technology will issue new ID cards to students and employees on regional campuses starting June 25. For more information about updated identification cards, including card replacement policy and frequently asked questions, go to http://technology.ohio.edu/idcards/.
