Dean of University Libraries Julia Zimmerman accepts Florida State position
Associate Dean for Collective Development Jan Maxwell named interim dean

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 26, 2007) -- Dean of University Libraries Julia Zimmerman has announced she has accepted a position as director of university libraries at her alma mater, Florida State University. Associate Dean for Collection Development Jan Maxwell will assume the role of interim dean, effective May 18.

Julia Zimmerman photo by Rick Fatica"Julia has been a great asset to our libraries and to Ohio University," Provost Kathy Krendl said. "She has focused her efforts on bringing our library functions and services into the 21st century. She will be remembered for creating a new identity for Alden Library."

Zimmerman said the move is a way for her to give back to the institution where she received her bachelor's degree and where she launched her career. "FSU is the only place that could draw me away from Ohio University," she said. "I've really loved working here."

Of her eight years at Ohio University, Zimmerman said she is proud of her work on facilities improvements, including creating a master plan for the renovation of Alden Library and developing the Learning Commons on Alden's second floor.

"We have made significant improvements to Alden Library. It has become a mecca for students," she said, adding that the library's gate count has gone up 30 percent since the 2004 completion of the Learning Commons.

Zimmerman, who spent 20 years at Georgia Institute of Technology before coming to Ohio University, said she and her staff have been committed to meeting the university's needs as technology has improved. With her guidance, the library has crafted a plan to evolve its organization and help it keep pace with changes in the way libraries store information and the way university communities use libraries.

"We're on a technological roller coaster," she said. "You have to create an organization that accommodates that."

The plan will be finalized and implemented beginning this spring. Maxwell, who will serve as interim dean until the university completes a national search for Zimmerman's successor, will be in charge of continuing the restructuring process.

Zimmerman said that Maxwell, who has led the reorganization effort, is the "ideal person to continue the effort." Zimmerman explained further that her experience with Ohio University and a number of other major research libraries has prepared Maxwell for success in the position.
