ZANESVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 19, 2007) -- Ohio University-Zanesville will once again host the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Honors Institute for gifted and talented 10th and 11th grade students this summer. Also, for the second consecutive year VAPA has been designated as a Summer Honors Institute thanks to receiving a very competitive grant from the Ohio Department of Education. The residential institute will run June 11 through 15.
"Each year, the summer institute has grown," said Donna L. Clevinger, who envisioned the concept of VAPA and made it a reality. Clevinger is the director of the VAPA Institute as well as the associate dean of Ohio University Zanesville.
"My thanks to the secondary school teachers in the arts, interested high school counselors and our previous summer institute coordinators for spreading the word about this program. Karen Brown from the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center and Beth Hahn from the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center have been with me since the initial meeting in the fall of 2004. Much of the institute's success stems from the hard work of these two individuals."
Art, creative writing, dance, digital media, music and theatre are the areas of exploration during the weeklong program. The traditional trip to Columbus to tour museums, galleries and theatres will continue, along with some new artistic surprises.
"The main focus is exposing these gifted students to working professionals and offering educational opportunities for their artistic futures," Clevinger said.
Applications are now being accepted. This is a selective admissions institute with limited enrollment. Students are nominated by their visual and performing arts teachers or gifted coordinators and must be identified as gifted by Ohio Department of Education standards.
The VAPA Web site has application information including contact information for the institute and additional information from previous years. Students have attended from all over the state but especially from Muskingum and surrounding counties. The application deadline is March 16.
