ACS partnership awards $5K in research funds
All enrolled graduate students encouraged to submit letters of intent by March 12

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 15, 2007) -- The American Cancer Society/Ohio University partnership recently awarded $5,000 in research funds to three students and is calling for proposals to fund research this summer. Letters of intent should be submitted by March 12.

Funds have been appropriated by the partnership for the purpose of developing research from the university to benefit local communities. Although the intent of the program is to award funding on an annual basis, funds have been identified for a summer 2007 cycle.

Ohio University students from across academic disciplines are invited to submit proposals for research addressing issues of cancer in Southeast Ohio as a region of Appalachia. Clinical research and research related to the development of medication are not eligible for the award.

Clinical psychology doctoral student Jessica Grayson, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism graduate student Jeannette Lovejoy, and clinical psychology doctoral student and public health graduate student Travis Lovejoy were recently awarded $5,000 for research to be conducted during the 2006-2007 academic year. Their research will address both barriers and facilitators to cancer screening and identify the sources of health information most used by Appalachian Ohioans.

Graduate students are asked to submit a one-page letter of intent to Marie Thompson, ACS partnership coordinator, RTV 460, Athens, Ohio, or Marie.A.Thompson.1@ohio.edu by March 12.  Full proposals will be due by April 16, 2007. Proposals will be blind-reviewed by a faculty panel, and applicants will be notified in May. Successful applicants will be required to submit a final summary and report and may apply for renewed funding in the next academic year. Exemplary research papers will be presented at the Appalachia Community Cancer Network conference in April 2008.
