Ohio University students earn most awards at national competition
ATHENS, Ohio (Dec. 4, 2006) -- Ohio University junior Matt Eich was named 2006 College Photographer of the Year in the annual competition sponsored by the University of Missouri. Judges selected the award-winning pieces from more than 12,500 image submissions by undergraduate and graduate students.
Fourteen Ohio University students, all from the School of Visual Communication, earned 25 awards. Ohio University, the only university in the state of Ohio to win any honors, earned almost 30 percent of the 85 awards in the national competition.
Eich's portfolio was awarded the gold in the Portfolio category, earning him the highly competitive internship with National Geographic. His work also received silver in the Portrait and Personal Vision categories and an award of excellence in the Feature category.
"Matt is an outstanding undergraduate photojournalist. He has had a tremendous year, and College Photographer of the Year is a great capstone," School of Visual Communication Director Terry Eiler said. "This year he has earned the Orange Country Register internship and a commendation from The Times (of London) Ian Parry award."
To be eligible for the College Photographer of the Year competition, students must have less than two years of full-time experience as professional photographers.
"I am amazed and humbled by the talent of our students," Eiler said. "This contest allows entry from all students from all programs across the country. For our students to fare so well is an indication of the depth of talent in the School of Visual Communication."
Ohio University has participated in the competition, the oldest and most-respected collegiate photography competition in the nation, since its beginning 61 years ago. The Ohio University School of Visual Communication has been recognized twice as a Program of Excellence by the Ohio Board of Regents. The school has produced more Fulbright Fellowships in the last five years than any other university photography program in the country.
