ATHENS, Ohio (Dec. 4, 2006) -- Shawn Ostermann, Ph.D., has been named interim chief information officer for Ohio University, President Roderick J. McDavis announced today.
Ostermann, who specializes in computer networking with expertise in data security, will fill the role while Ohio University continues its national search for a permanent CIO.
A member of the faculty for the last 13 years, Ostermann is an associate professor and chair of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Prior to that, he was with the college of Arts and Sciences.
Ostermann succeeds Bill Sams, who announced his resignation in July. Ostermann does not plan to seek the permanent position.
Sams, who has been CIO since 2004, will continue to serve as an associate provost working on technology-related projects, including information technology governance, and will assist Ostermann with the transition.
"Shawn Ostermann has a great deal of technical expertise and a solid grasp of the university's needs," McDavis said. "I am very, very pleased that he has agreed to serve in this role until we fill the permanent job."
Effective Jan. 1, Ostermann will lead the university's central information technology group, which oversees computer, infrastructure and security policies and manages central e-mail, telephone, computer networking and administrative data services.
Ostermann said he will focus on laying the groundwork for a permanent CIO and that his top priorities will be to strengthen data security and to involve faculty, staff and students in setting the priorities for information technology.
"As a member of the CIO search committee, I've become very familiar with the challenges and opportunities facing the IT group," Ostermann said. "I am looking forward to working with them to continue the good progress that Bill and the staff have made. There's a great deal of consensus about what needs to be done."
Sams said he is pleased with the direction that the IT team is heading. "We've come a long way in the last six months. We have an excellent staff, and we're working together to focus on what really matters," he said. "I have done what I can, and a new set of skills will carry us forward."
