Board of Trustees to discuss next year's budget proposal

ATHENS, Ohio (April 20, 2007) -- The Ohio University Board of Trustees will meet on campus today at 1:30 p.m. in the Walter Hall Governance Room. The meeting is open to the public.

The Audit, Finance, Facilities and Investments Committee meets at 10 a.m. in Walter Hall 104; the Academic Quality Committee meets at 11 a.m. in Walter Hall 127; and the Student Life, Human Resources and Athletics Committee meets at 11 a.m. in Walter Hall 125.

Much of the discussion at the formal board meeting will center on the FY '08 budget. Other key discussions will surround IT updates.

Items the board will vote on include the school status of the George V. Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs; the new AFSCME labor agreement; the naming of the new Procterville Center building; faculty fellowships; faculty emeritus/emerita nominations; several construction projects and honorary degrees; and the board's meeting dates for the 2007-08 academic year. A $7.2 million construction project that includes an addition to Porter Hall, the razing of Anderson Hall and the creation of a new access road that connects Richland Avenue to the front of the new Baker University Center will be voted on.

The board will hear seven-year academic program reviews on the civil engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and mechanical engineering departments and the School of Physical Therapy. The board will also hear presentations on the future growth of the university's Learning Communities and plans to create a Comprehensive Student Leadership Development Program that helps students develop into effective leaders.

Board members participated in a workshop Thursday afternoon aimed at increasing their capacity to strengthen the university. Led by Robert Woodbury, former president of the University of Southern Maine and former chancellor of the University of Maine System, the session gave the board an opportunity to examine its role and responsibilities, review priorities and processes, and strengthen its working relationships and communication among members and with the administration.
