Peace officer basic training program offered at Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (April 17, 2007) -- The Southern Ohio Police Training Institute (SOPTI) will be conducting a Peace Officer Basic Training Course in conjunction with the Law Enforcement Technology Department of Ohio University-Chillicothe.

The Basic Training Course offered by SOPTI will begin on June 18.  The 600+ hour course is certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and successful graduates will be eligible for certification as Ohio peace officers.  Graduates can receive up to 30 quarter hours of college credit towards an associate degree in law enforcement technology at Ohio University.

The academy program is open for two types of students:  (1) those associated with or employed by a qualifying law enforcement agency and (2) open enrollment students, who are not currently associated with a law enforcement agency, but have career goals to seek employment as peace officers.

An evening and Saturday schedule is planned to accommodate both working and full-time students.  Financial aid opportunities may exist for qualified students under V.A. benefits, G.I. Bill, Pell Grants, student loans, etc.

Application deadline for the Summer 07 academy is May 17.
