ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 16, 2005) -- The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology's undergraduate engineering programs have been reaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.
The college received notice in August that its programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and mechanical engineering passed the reaccredidation review.
In the United States, accreditation is a non-governmental, peer review process that ensures educational quality. Educational institutions or programs volunteer to periodically undergo this review in order to determine if certain criteria are being met. ABET normally reviews programs every six years.
ABET performed the official review at the Russ College in October 2004. According to Russ College Dean Dennis Irwin, many individuals put forth a dedicated effort to prepare.
"I'd like to thank all those who participated, from faculty -- especially those who did self-study reports -- to department chairs, students, and our various advisory boards," Irwin said.
The recent review was especially challenging because it was the first time the programs were scrutinized under the new EC2000 guidelines, a new set of standards for reviewing an engineering curriculum. The guidelines use an outcomes-and-assessment-based criterion instead of simply counting credit hours of different course topics.
"I was really pleased to see how well each program responded to both the spirit and the letter of the new criteria," said Ken Sampson, associate dean for academics.
ABET is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. A federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing these fields, ABET is among the most respected accreditation organizations in the U.S.
