Roger Cooper named director of the School of Telecommunications

ATHENS, Ohio (Sept. 9, 2005) -- College of Communication interim Dean Greg Shepherd has appointed Roger Cooper director of the School of Telecommunications. The appointment is effective immediately.

Roger CooperCooper replaces Karen Riggs, who has stepped down to serve as director for the college's new GRID Lab initiative. She had served as director of the school since 2001.

Cooper joined the Ohio University faculty in 2004 and has been serving as an associate professor and as the associate director for graduate studies. He earned a Ph.D. in mass communication from Indiana University and both a master of mass communication and a bachelor of science in radio-television from Arkansas State University.

"I am very pleased to be able to appoint Roger as the next director of the School of Telecommunications," Shepherd said. "Roger came to us a year ago with strong administrative experience and has been working very effectively for the past eight months as associate director for graduate studies in the School. Roger will continue the outstanding leadership provided by outgoing director Karen Riggs and help the School move forward as it continues to provide first-rate instruction to students and cutting-edge creative and research work. I am grateful that he has agreed to join our leadership team."

Cooper has served as associate professor and chair at the Department of Radio-Television Film at Texas University, as a Fulbright lecturer at Osaka University in Japan, and as a consultant for the National Association of Broadcasters in Japan. He says he is assuming the director role in a very exciting time for the industry.

"I work with a great group of people and we're going to do a lot of great things in the coming years," he said. "It's a real challenge to teach our area because media and technology are constantly evolving. Preparing people for success in the media industry is going to be a great challenge, but a lot of fun. The faculty and staff are excited by the prospect."

Along with Cooper's Fulbright-funded year in Japan as an analyst for the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan, he also spent 12 years at Texas Christian University, four of which were in the role of chairperson of the Radio, TV and Film Department.
