Ohio University launches Landlord Information Sharing Program

ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 24, 2005) -- A landlord information sharing program is now available for Ohio University students to assist them in choosing housing in upcoming years, and to help current off-campus students resolve conflicts with their existing landlord.

"It is our goal to foster positive relations between student-tenants and their landlords, and this is a formal way to track housing concerns," said Off-Campus Living Office Coordinator Jim Hintz. "The program will help students to communicate with their landlord about an issue, and help students looking for housing to gauge which landlords are the most responsive by reviewing comments offered by past tenants."

The goals of the Landlord Information Sharing program are to provide students with a constructive format about the quality of off-campus living that will lead to issue resolution, to provide neutral context in which landlords can respond to and address student concerns, to provide a record of concerns raised and the manner in which concerns were raised, and to reduce the number of student concerns and complaints that go unknown, unresolved or escalate beyond the point of resolution.

The program allows students to fill out a landlord information comment form explaining concerns or issues about the landlord and or property. The Off-Campus Living staff will review the completed comment form and forward a copy to the landlord. The landlord may respond to concerns directly or by letter to the Off-Campus Living Office. Copies of comment forms and landlord response forms will be kept on file for the public to view in the Off-Campus Living Office, Baker University Center room 204.

Students viewing the landlord files are encouraged to consider not only the number and type of concerns and issues, but also the landlord's response to the problem.

The program also assists students if a landlord does not respond to a problem, or responds unfavorably, working with them to accomplish a resolution, or directing them to another agency that can better assist them.

The Off-Campus Living Office also encourages reporting positive landlord and rental property experiences for the viewing of future tenants.

Landlord information comment forms are available online at www.ohio.edu/offcampus/living/landlordinfoshare.cfm.
