Ohio University Eastern to host career day for eighth grade students

ATHENS, Ohio (March 13, 2006) -- Ohio University Eastern will host the fourth annual 8th Grade Career Day on Thursday, March 23. Nearly 1,200 area eighth grade students from Belmont, Harrison and Monroe counties will be able to explore career opportunities and gain experience from the event.

Students will be able to explore many educational and career choices. Special guest speakers will highlight this event by sharing their expertise about their careers, experience, and educational backgrounds to students interested in a particular field.

"I think the 8th Grade Career Day is an excellent event for our area students," said Dr. Paul E. Bibbins, Jr., Eastern Campus dean. "Opportunities such as this will begin to plant the seed of the value of higher education. This is why the Eastern Campus established the Junior Bobcat Camp for fifth and sixth graders. It is never too early to begin to introduce students to educational opportunities beyond high school."

Some of the careers and occupations that will be discussed at the career day include: business, management, education, law, government, finance, and visual and performing arts.

"It is wonderful to have so many local professionals take time from their busy schedules to come out and speak to our eighth graders about their future career choices," said Penny Fox, career education coordinator at Belmont-Harrison Career & Technical Planning District. "This is the fourth year for this event, and many of our speakers have been involved in Career Day from the beginning."

Students will gain valuable information about types of training required, advantages and disadvantages of certain careers, annual incomes, and the personality type needed to achieve success in their field of choice.

"Career Day is an excellent venue for students to begin career planning," said Christina Want, director of College Tech Prep. "The format affords students the opportunity to ask questions of professionals regarding the education required, job duties, and salary potential."

The 8th Grade Career Day is sponsored by Ohio University Eastern, Belmont-Harrison Career Development Program and Eastern Ohio Valley Tech Prep Consortium. Students will be treated to lunch and each student who attends will receive a free t-shirt. For additional information call (740) 699-2517 or 1-800-648-3331, ext. 2517.
