Ohio University industrial technology names new department chair

ATHENS, Ohio (June 14, 2006) -- The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University will welcome Peter Klein as the new chair of the Department of Industrial Technology, effective July 1. Klein replaces James F. Fales, who is retiring after 20 years of service as the department's chair.

"Dr. Klein is a valued member of the IT faculty," Russ College Dean Dennis Irwin said. "I look forward to working with him as he takes on a number of challenges, such as curriculum review, with great enthusiasm and innovative ideas."

A Russ College faculty since 1990, Klein said he plans to maintain the continuous improvement that has made the department one of the premier departments of industrial technology in the nation.

"We have a reputation of preparing students that have both a current and relevant education in the areas of manufacturing materials and processes as well as manufacturing information technology," Klein said. "We'll continue to develop our programs of study to prepare students for the ever-changing demands of a global manufacturing environment."

Klein has been in the forefront of plastics education for over 30 years both in industry and in higher education. In industry, he held various management positions at major U.S. corporations, including Hewlett Packard, IBM and AMPEX Corporation. Working in manufacturing, engineering and business management, he was instrumental in those organizations' implementation of total quality management, just-in-time operations and employee involvement programs.

Klein also developed and taught a wide variety of employee and management development courses at the companies, and he has taught at Colorado State University and at the Akron Polymer Training Center.

He has authored numerous papers and has made presentations in the areas of industrial plastics and composites as well as quality management. His commitment to teaching was recognized in 1998 with the Russ College's Russ Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. In 2004, he was named a Kraft Family Scholar beginning in 2004. He received the college's 2006 White Department Research Award for his study of carbon nano-fiber polymer composites.

Klein earned a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Ohio University, a M.Ed. in industrial technology from Colorado State University and a B.S. industrial technology education from Illinois State University.
