ATHENS, Ohio (June 1, 2006) -- Three Ohio University professors were presented with Distinguished Service awards at the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (ONCA) Celebration and Appreciation Lunch on May 25, 2006. In addition, one academic department was granted the Outstanding Department Award. Harvey Ballard, Elizabeth Collins, and Lois Vines were selected in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to Ohio University students as they compete for prestigious scholarships and for their service to ONCA.
Harvey Ballard, assistant professor of environmental and plant biology, has served on mock interview committees for the Marshall Scholarship, Rhodes Scholarship and Presidential Management Internship, and participated in the Fulbright Interview Committees. Ballard was also a part of the NSF and Udall Advisory Committees. In addition, over the years he has mentored and written letters of support for numerous students in support of their scholarship applications.
Elizabeth Collins, associate professor in the Department of Classics & World Religions, has mentored and advised numerous award applicants, including three Fulbright applicants this year. In addition, Elizabeth has repeatedly served on the Fulbright Scholarship Interview Committee.
Lois Vines, professor of modern languages, has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to mentoring students over the past years, most notably with her work with the French Government Teaching Assistantships, which eight students won this year. In addition, Vines has served on interview committees for the Carnegie and Fulbright awards.
The Department of Geography received this year's Outstanding Department Award because of the faculty's continued support of ONCA. The department as a whole has supported students in competing for many awards over the years, most notably the Udall and Hollings Scholarships. Faculty members write letters and serve on committees, in addition to serving as advisors and mentors. Their support has been integral to the success of many award applicants.
Faculty members are instrumental in mentoring, advising, and inspiring students to apply for and win prestigious scholarships and awards. Their contributions are the crucial ingredient in Ohio University students' successes in competing for national prestigious scholarships.
