ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 31, 2006) -- Athens residents can enjoy an evening of fine food and fashion while helping a good cause by attending a benefit gala for Ohio University's Mary C. Doxsee Historic Costume and Textile Collection on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Margaret M. Walter Hall rotunda from 6 to 10 p.m.
Created in 1953, the Doxsee collection houses one-of-a-kind examples of historic and ethnic apparel and textile items that are used as research and educational resources.
The collection is named after the professor emeritus in the School of Human and Consumer Sciences who created it. Many of the items in the collection are Doxsee's finds during extensive travels. Ohio University student organizations, community members and friends of the program donated others.
Funds raised from admission to the event, called "Cycles of Fashion: Dress Your Best," will be used to create a photo gallery of the collection so that it can be made available on CDs and the Internet.
The event will feature a fashion show and costume displays presented by students studying the history of costume. Students studying beverage management will present wine and food pairings, along with extensive dessert offerings. The Jitterbug Club will provide dancing entertainment.
Tickets for the event are $80 if reserved in advance, $90 if purchased at the door. Reservations are strongly suggested, and can be made by emailing Jane Boney at firstname.lastname@example.org by noon on Thursday, Feb. 2. Reservations will be confirmed via return email, and tickets will be distributed at the entrance to the event.
Checks for advance tickets should be made payable to the Ohio University Foundation, with a note in the memo to the Mary C. Doxsee fund. Checks should be mailed to: Doxsee gala: School of Human and Consumer Sciences, Grover Center W324, Athens, OH 45701.
