ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 25, 2006) -- The Ohio University club hockey team will induct two former players and a former faculty adviser into its Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 28, as part of the Ohio Hockey Alumni Weekend.
Robert Bray of Athens, who played for the Bobcats from 1972-75, is one of the two players being inducted. He was a team captain and the leading scorer in 1975. The other player, Chuck Wilson of New Jersey, was a goalie from 1976-80 and was a Midwest Collegiate Hockey League tournament MVP in the 1978-79 season.
"It's something people only dream about when you start playing a sport as a kid," Wilson said after learning of his nomination in December. "I [have] the greatest memories of my days at OU and playing hockey."
Also being inducted is James Gilmore of Athens, who served as an adviser for the Ohio University Hockey team for 18 years. Gilmore recently retired after serving as executive director of the university's Division of Campus Recreation.
Gilmore was nominated for the honor by Tim Connor, assistant sports information director at the University of Notre Dame, who worked for the Ohio team from 1980-83. During that time, Gilmore was rink manager and adviser for the team, helping to ease the organization's transition from varsity to club sport.
"In my opinion, the first-class program that is the Ohio University hockey program wouldn't be where it is without Jim Gilmore,'' Conner wrote in a recommendation letter. "In fact, it might not even exist if it wasn't for him."
The Ohio University Hockey Hall of Fame recognizes selected players, coaches or other individuals who have demonstrated meritorious service and made a lasting impression on the hockey program.
The Hall of Fame inductions are part of the Ohio Hockey Alumni Weekend, which will take place Jan. 27-28 and will also feature an alumni hockey game at Bird Arena, dinner, a chili social and the current Bobcats as they face off against Duquesne Friday and Saturday night.
The Blueline Booster Club, a non-profit organization formed to support ice hockey at Ohio University, helped organize the alumni weekend of events. For additional information about the team and the event, go to www.ohiobobcatshockey.com.
