ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 28, 2006) -- Children and their families enrolled in the Head Start preschool program will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with storytelling, hands-on literacy activities, dinner and birthday cake. Head Start will host the family event and Ohio University-Zanesville Jumpstart AmeriCorps team members will provide and facilitate some of the activities.
Ohio University-Zanesville Jumpstart team members who will participate in the event include Stacy Vaughn of Blue Rock; Tricia Dickson of Duncan Falls; Hillary Little of Nashport; Nick Wright of Newark; and Megan Culp, Michael Emmert, Kellye Krebs, Danae Lacy, Megan Pletcher and Sarah Stephenson, all of Zanesville.
"The collaboration between the Jumpstart program at Ohio University Zanesville and Head Start offers our students opportunities to gain hands-on experience vital to their early childhood development college education," Jumpstart Site Manager Colleen Romito said. "The interaction with the preschool children and their families is a critical component to providing high quality preschool programming." Romito adds, "Many adults remember reading a Dr. Seuss book as a child and many early childhood programs across the country plan events around this time of the year to celebrate the joy of families reading together."
"Family involvement is a very important part of the Head Start program. Celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday is a fun way to bring families together and focus on the importance of reading daily to young children," said Teresa Crumbaker, Head Start parent involvement/family literacy manager.
Jumpstart College Student Corps members are paired with preschool children to work together on language, literacy, social and initiative skills. In addition, the Corps members work with the families to provide a holistic approach to school readiness. The program inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved and communities to progress together.
