ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 21, 2006) -- Ohio University professors Ludwig Figueroa and Eric Steinberg are being honored for their great work as civil engineering educators. Figueroa was elected as a Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Steinberg will receive the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's Distinguished Educator Award this October.
As an elected ASCE Fellow, Figueroa has "demonstrated a broad responsibility for engineering work of major importance," according to Kristen Lykke, applications coordinator for ASCE. Fellows have attained leadership roles within the fields of engineering practice, research or academia, and the duties and responsibilities of a Fellow must be clearly above that required for the Member grade. Less than 6 percent of the society's membership has attained Fellow grade.
"I appreciate the honor of being recognized as a Fellow of the ASCE," Figueroa said. "It is rewarding to be acknowledged for my contributions to the field of civil engineering."
Figueroa received his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois and his bachelor's degree from the University of the Andes in Colombia. His areas of specialization are soil dynamics, earthquake engineering and pavement engineering.
Steinberg will receive his Distinguished Educator Award, which includes a $3,000 prize, at the annual PCI convention in Grapevine, Texas, in October. This award recognizes distinguished educators with many years of outstanding service to the precast/prestressed concrete industry.
"It was an honor just to be nominated for the award, especially considering past recipients," Steinberg said. "I was elated beyond words to actually be chosen the Distinguished Educator by PCI and be placed amongst nationally and internationally renowned educators in our field."
Steinberg was also awarded the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's Central Region 2005 Professor of the Year Award from the Central Region of PCI, which includes Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and parts of Pennsylvania, Illinois and West Virginia.
