Artist Phoebe Beasley to speak at undergraduate commencements

ATHENS, Ohio (June 3, 2005) -- World-renowned artist and Ohio University alumna Arlene "Phoebe" Beasley will address more than 3,000 undergraduates at Ohio University's undergraduate commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Convocation Center.

Pheobe BeasleyBeasley specializes in oils-on-canvas as well as prints and collages and her works are featured in the homes of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby and Maya Angelou. She is the only artist to twice receive the Presidential Seal on her artworks. Her commissions include the official artist of the 2000 National Democratic Convention, the 1987 and 2000 Los Angeles marathons and the 100 Black Men National Convention in Detroit in 1999.

Beasley earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in art education from Ohio University and worked for 29 years in merchandise design at KFI-AM radio. For more information on Beasley, visit www.phoebebeasley.com

The morning undergraduate commencement ceremony will recognize bachelor and associate degree candidates in the colleges of Business, Communication, Fine Arts and Health and Human Services. The afternoon session will honor candidates in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education and Engineering and Technology as well as those in Honors Tutorial College, University College and Regional Higher Education. Both undergraduate ceremonies will be streamed live on the Web at www.ohio.edu/live

Graduate Commencement

Daniel Modaff, associate professor in the School of Communication Studies of the College of Communication and the 2004 Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member, will address the graduate commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the Convocation Center. The College of Osteopathic Medicine presented Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees Saturday, June 4, at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
