Graduating seniors can find free alumni advice and pizza at 'Take a Slice of Ohio University With You 2005'

By Cari R. Armstrong

Thousands of graduating students are diligently looking for jobs, applying for graduate school and, of course, remaining dedicated to their studies as they prepare to say goodbye to Ohio University in June.

Many of these seniors are stressed about relocating, finding a job, making new friends and just starting over again. The Student Alumni Board and the Ohio University Alumni Association are prepared to make graduating a little easier for seniors.

"Take A Slice of Ohio University with You" is returning for a fourth year of dishing out relocation tips, networking opportunities, life advice and lots of free pizza from noon to 4 p.m., May 19, at the Konneker Alumni Center.

"Alumni and university professionals are passionate about this institution, so 'Take a Slice' provides the perfect opportunity to offer valuable advice about real life after graduation," said Dawn Werry, assistant director of Outreach and Engagement for the Ohio University Alumni Association.

At the event, graduating seniors will also be able to learn about all of the great services provided by the Alumni Association once they graduate, and they will be introduced to the Alumni Association's partner services, such as insurance for recent graduates. Seniors automatically become members of the Ohio University Alumni Association when they graduate. There will be information on several different cities available and seniors can learn about many different aspects of transitioning to a new location.

Attendees of "Take a Slice" will have the opportunity to purchase the book, "Life After School. Explained." at a discounted price of $5. The book is a humorous guide to surviving outside of Ohio University with easy-to-follow instructions on a myriad of subjects, including how to balance a checkbook, how to host a business dinner and explanations of tax forms and HMOs.

"This event allows graduation seniors the opportunity to learn about the many products and services offered by the Alumni Association," Werry said.

In addition to the many areas covered at "Take a Slice," Student Alumni Board is hosting two seminars that will go further in depth on issues that may concern graduating seniors.

At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, Liberty Mutual will be holding an informational session on insurance at Konneker. Many seniors are unaware they might lose their health insurance when they graduate. Liberty Mutual will provide information on the best health insurance plans for recent graduates and will discuss auto, home, life and disability insurance plans available to graduating seniors. In addition to providing insurance information at a seminar, Liberty Mutual also will also raffle off an iPod at "Take a Slice."

Following the insurance seminar, there will be an informational session on housing at 8 p.m. at Konneker. Susan Barga from Larry Conrath Realty will be on hand to discuss the benefits and negative aspects of buying or leasing a home.

"Take a Slice of Ohio University with You" is supported by Liberty Mutual, Follett's University Bookstore, Court Street Diner, Quiznos Sub, Premiere Video and Magic Video.
