Bobcats rank fifth and 14th after third week of RecycleMania

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 25, 2005) -- Ohio University is in fifth place out of 33 schools after week three of RecycleMania 2005 with a total of 16.61 recycled pounds of waste per student living on campus. The Bobcats trail the University of Oregon (20.77), defending champion Miami University (19.90), 2003 champion Bowling Green State University (18.07) and newcomer Oregon State University (16.81) in the standings. Ohio University recorded a third-week rate of 5.01 pounds per student, which was the sixth-highest total of the week.

In the first year of the all-campus recycling competition, Ohio sits 14th out of 28 competing schools with 24.89 percent of its total waste recycled. California State University San Marcos holds the top spot with a recycling rate of 42.64 percent.

"Sibs Weekend boosted our numbers in week two, so I expect Parents Weekend to boost our numbers in week four," said Ohio University Refuse and Recycling Manager Ed Newman. "We have to find a way to continually increase our recycling each week if we are going to stay near the top of the standings. If we can increase our efforts, we can make an impact on the standings and make a run for the trophy."

The primary goal of RecycleMania is to increase awareness about recycling and involve the entire campus in the university's recycling program. Studies have shown that university and college residence and dining halls typically generate 30 to 70 percent of a campus' total waste, half of which is recyclable.

The institution that recycles the most pounds per student living on campus during the 10-week showdown is the winner. The winning school of the residence hall competition will receive the RecycleMania trophy and a congratulatory half-page ad in all of the other participating schools' newspapers. The winner of the all-campus recycling competition will receive the Bowling Pin Character from Junk Trophy.
