ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 20, 2005) -- The 2004-05 Ohio University Kennedy Lecture Series will present an evening with hip-hop visionary Russell Simmons, entitled, "Hip-Hop in Academia." The lecture is Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
Simmons has shaped hip-hop culture and been a visionary for its past, present and future. He has reached every facet of hip-hop life and continues to advocate in both music and film.
He was instrumental in bringing hip-hop to business and media and continues to endorse it to this day. He is well known for his HBO series, "Def Comedy Jam;" his Tony Award-winning stage production, "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway;" in the fashion industry with Phat Farm, Baby Phat, Run Athletics and Def Jam University clothing lines; and in publishing with OneWorld Magazine. He also authored his memoir, "Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money and God," which will be available for purchase prior to and after the lecture.
Simmons is a native New Yorker whose interests stretch beyond hip-hop and business. He enjoys working for social, political, and philanthropic causes in conjunction his ongoing pursuit of pushing hip-hop to new plateaus.
