WOUB-TV announces the Young Writers and Illustrators Contest

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 14, 2005) -- Calling all young artists and writers! WOUB-TV and "Reading Rainbow" invite youngsters to participate in the Eleventh Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Contest.

Children from kindergarten to third grade are encouraged to write and illustrate their own stories and enter them into this contest. Conducted in cooperation with WOUB-TV, applications are available from the WOUB-TV station, our web site: http://woub.org/kids/outreach.htm, local libraries and elementary schools in the WOUB-TV viewing area. WOUB-TV is currently accepting stories. Entries must arrive no later than April 1, 2005. The address is: Reading Rainbow, WOUB-TV, 9 South College Street, Athens, Ohio, 45701.

This is the third year the contest will partner with the PBS Kids campaign, Share a Story: Give Them Words to Grow By, which is a national initiative inspiring adults to help children develop language and literacy skills through daily activities.

Entries are judged locally at WOUB-TV with local first place winners advancing to the national competition. Every child participating in the contest receives a special certificate of achievement signed by "Reading Rainbow" host LeVar Burton. In addition, WOUB-TV will conduct a station celebration for local winning contestants and their families - and, each child that enters this contest will receive a brand new book, compliments of WOUB-TV.

All national - grand prize, second and third place - winners (twelve in all) will have their stories featured on pbskids.org, one of the most-used national websites for children. They also receive a "Reading Rainbow" library set of ten DVD and matching feature book.

In 2004, Reading Rainbow's Young Writers & Illustrators Contest attracted 45,000 entries, with national recognition and prizes going to children from Kansas, North Dakota, California, Tennessee, Indiana, Minnesota, Virginia, Oregon, Michigan and Connecticut.
