Raising awareness, understanding of disabilities

ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 26, 2004) -- Ohio University's Office for Institutional Equity/Disability Services and the Martin Luther King Committee are sponsoring Disability Awareness Day Wednesday, Oct. 27. The purpose of Disability Awareness Day is to educate and promote understanding of disabilities in the university community.

J.W. Smith, an associate professor in the School of Communication Studies, will speak at noon in the 1804 room in Baker University Center. Smith was recently named 2004 Blind Educator of the Year by the National Federation of the Blind.

At 8 p.m. Joe Shapiro will be speaking in Margaret Walter Hall room 135. Shapiro is a science correspondent for National Public Radio and has received awards from several major disability organizations. He is the author of the book "NO PITY: People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement."
