Fall Book Sale

Family Practice Club Menu

The Family Practice Club will be holding its second annual book sale. The book sale is intended to provide an alternative to 1st and 2nd year student for used book buying through 2nd and 3rd year sellers.

Sellers: check the following information on the book sale : rules, forms, pricing, correspondance and then download the seller inventory form and the receipt form.

Buyers: we will be updating you on the date of the sale and we remind you to bring your check book (no IOU's accepted).

A. RULES

This year's book sale will be slightly modified from lastyear's.
First, the class of 2002 will be receiving two forms in your mailbox and by email, you can also download a copy from this website within the next week.
Members of the class of 2003, you will be receiving an email with the invoice and receipt sheet attached or you can download it from this website.
Follow the instructions on pricing.
Submit appropriate correspondance information, details listed below.

B. Forms:

One form you will likely make several copies of. It contains about 10 copies of "receipts". These receipts will have your name, the name of the book, the price that you are hoping to get and then a line for the surcharge and then the total selling price. For these "receipts", please fill in all the lines. Then tape each receipt on the front cover with the appropriate book.
The second form is a summary sheet. Please fill in all the lines (except for the line that says "actual price sold for". The club will fill this line in and this form will be a way we can account for your books and make sure youget your money.)

C. Pricing:

Please ask for a reasonable amount.
We are suggesting your profit be 55-60 percent of the original price if it's a "new" edition AND it's currently being used by students in the present curricula. (This is more than you'd get from going to the bookstores to sell them back and you'll be directly helping incoming students, because you'll be keeping their costs down. Also, the Family Practice Club will use funds generated from this to help all students.)
If the books are older editions or not used much, only ask about 10-25 percent of the original price.
If the books are REALLY old, please don't submit them because they likely won't sell and we'll have todispose of them.
Grouping sets of books: To ensure your books are sold, please group books that are in a series. For example, the Underground Clinical Vignettes contain eight or nine books. Put an asking price for all the books together (so you don't have to price each individual book). This would apply to the Board SimSeries, also.
Dropping off books:For your convenience, the LRC staff has graciously allowed us to place a box in the LRC for you to drop off your books. Please drop off your books, along with the summary form. We will pick up the books each day.
The surcharge: This year, the Family Practice Club will set a 10 percent surcharge on every book submitted. This will cover the cost of organizing the event and actually selling your books. So, if you wanted to get $10 for a book, then the Family Practice Club would make $1 and the total "asking"price would be $11.
The Family Practice Club is a broker: When you submit your books with the receipts attached on the front, the books will become the responsibility of the Family Practice Club. In order to move the books, if they have been priced too high, the club may reduce the price of the book after the first day of the sale to ensure we move your books. We will reduce the price REASONABLY so you can still get as much for your books. We don't have the manpower to contact each of you about every book if they aren't selling. There was confusion on this fact last year. We don't have the kind of cash it would take to buy each book from you. But, the books become our responsibility to move whenever they are given to us. Also, so there are no misunderstandings ... we will not be able to pay to send (THROUGH THE MAIL) books back to you that do not sell. If there are books that you would like back if they don't sell, please stipulate that and then we will work out a way to get the specified books back to you. Last year, the students who submitted books were tickled to get a check in the mail (some for as much as $500) and not have the books around to collect dust. Last year, the extra unsold books were sent to medical students in Africa (thanks to Kingsley Lartey). This may occur again this year.

D. CORRESPONDENCE REQUESTED:

Third years, please e-mail Les Combs your new address and phone number. I know many of you are still securing places. This will ensure that you get your money back quickly. Also, we will make a master sheet and distribute it to all of you, so you'll have a way of staying in touch with others in your class.
