What
is March of Dimes WalkAmerica?
- WalkAmerica
is the walk that saves babies.
- The
March of Dimes biggest fund-raiser, WalkAmerica supports
pioneering research and innovative programs that save
babies born prematurely or with birth defects. Since its
beginning in 1970, WalkAmerica has raised more than $1
billion to help give babies a fighting chance.
- Where
and when is WalkAmerica held?
- Now in
its 33rd year, WalkAmerica is the first and best walking
event in the nation, taking place in 1,400 communities in
all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Athens County's WalkAmerica route is a 5-mile trek
through the Ohio University campus.
- Who
participates in WalkAmerica?
- In
2001, more than nine million men, women and children will
participate as sponsors, volunteers or walkers -- more
than 500,000 people are expected to walk!
Whether they walk as individuals or as part of a team,
walkers ask friends, family, business associates and
others to sponsor them by making a donation to the March
of Dimes. Others volunteer their time to register
walkers, staff checkpoints and offer refreshments.
Teams represent companies, unions, schools, associations
and clubs, and can range from five members to the more
than 11,000 walkers who represented Kmart the March of
Dimes number one national team in 2000. In 2000, 24,000
teams accounted for more than 80 percent of the $89.3
million raised. More than $23.5 million of that total was
raised by 55 national teams.
