Is domain name registration the same as website hosting?

Domain name registration only manages the ownership and DNS (domain name system) settings of the domain name. Domain name registration also does not provide email hosting or website hosting. OIT offers other solutions for website hosting for both personal websites and static business websites, along with our primary Web CMS platform depending on your need. 

Can I forward my domain name to a different website or web page?

Yes. A domain name can be forwarded to another domain name or a page on another domain name. 

How do I manage my domain name’s DNS settings?

Requests for DNS changes can be submitted through the OIT service desk at help.ohio.edu.  

Can I forward an email from one domain name to a different email address?

Yes. Email addresses from your domain (ex: user@mydomain.com) can be forwarded to another email address such as your @ohio.edu email address. Note that email forward is a 1-1 relationship and a single address cannot be forwarded to multiple other email addresses. To do this, please establish a service account or shared mailbox and forward the email to that address. 

Does domain name registration provide email hosting?

What is a domain name registrar?

A domain name registrar is a company or service where users can buy and manage domain names. Examples include Google Domains, GoDaddy, NameCheap, etc. 

Can I transfer my domain name from a different registrar?

Yes. Some registrars place restrictions on when a domain name can be transferred based on how recently it was purchased or certain information was updated. 

How do I unlock my domain name so it can be transferred?

Domain names must be “unlocked” prior to OIT requesting a transfer. The process to unlock your current domain name varies depending on where your domain name is currently registered. Some common providers:
