Summer IT improvements to require down time

Thursday, July 3, 2014
Sean O'Malley

Heavy lifting: Crane operators replace a condenser in March 2013 for OHIO’s data center chiller. Improvements for summer 2014 include major electrical work and an internal network upgrade. The university’s ongoing project to modernize and improve the reliability of its IT infrastructure will require maintenance outages for core systems like Blackboard, email, PeopleSoft and e-Business throughout the remainder of summer 2014.

Whenever possible, this work will be scheduled during standard maintenance windows; however, due to the extensive nature of some of these improvements, outages may occasionally last longer than standard times. OIT will provide advance notice of all down time via email, Compass and the IT outage page.

This summer’s work includes completing major electrical upgrades and starting a major network upgrade for the university data center. Benefits include:

  • Reduced risk of unexpected power outages in the data center
  • Increased capacity to support future demand for core IT services
  • Better security
