Simpler password resets coming Dec. 18, 2016

Do you remember the name of your least favorite band or least favorite fictional character? Until recently you might have needed both to reset your OHIO password. Fortunately, security questions like those soon will be a thing of the past. On Dec. 18, 2016 OIT will release a new password management and account activation web tool that simplifies the password reset process.

Recovery via email or text message

The new tool uses a non-OHIO recovery email address and, optionally, a text-capable phone number to verify password reset requests. If you need to reset your OHIO password, the tool will send a confirmation code to your recovery email and, if you set it up, a text to your phone. Enter that code, and your password is reset: no obscure bands, fictional characters or other hard-to-remember questions or answers needed.  

Current students and employees will be able to set their recovery options starting Dec. 18 via account.ohio.edu. New students/employees will be prompted to set recovery options when they activate their OHIO ID.

Choose your own questions

The new tool does include security questions, but they work differently. First, there are no predetermined questions. You create your own. Secondly, your questions only come into play if you can’t receive a recovery code. In that case, you would call the IT Service Desk and answer your questions over the phone to complete the reset process.
