OHIO homepage makes early move to new WebCMS

Sunday, December 17, 2017
Sean O'Malley

On Friday, December 15, the OHIO homepage received a minor facelift and a major boost in accessibility, mobile compatibility, and reliability when OIT and UCM moved the page to the university’s new WebCMS. Regular visitors may notice some differences between the old and new versions, but overall the page bears a close resemblance to its predecessor.

Showcase videos, news, social media, and the Calendar of University Events continue to be featured content. Visitors using mobile devices and assistive technologies will notice improved formatting, and all visitors will notice a different top navigation menu with audience-specific links in an “Information for…” drop-down. Menu entries also can be accessed via an expandable icon similar to those found on mobile devices. Visitors who are accustomed to using the main menu to navigate to specific departments or pages may notice that their preferred links no longer appear in the drop-downs. This is a temporary limitation that will be addressed as soon as possible.

Early move to improve reliability

Although OHIO’s homepage was #2 on the university’s WebCMS prioritized migration list, OIT and UCM originally intended to postpone that move to address technical complexities and give the page a design refresh. Those plans changed, however, when the university’s data center started experiencing technical problems that caused slow load times and intermittent “server unavailable” errors for OHIO homepage visitors. Given the importance of OHIO’s web presence, the two departments made a joint decision to move the page immediately to reduce load on the data center and take advantage of the new WebCMS’s built-in reliability features.

More improvements in the works

The OHIO homepage may have moved to the new WebCMS sooner than anticipated, but that doesn’t mean the page is finished. OIT will work with UCM in the coming days to restore the full range of links to the main menus and bring them closer to the previous page’s approach. Longer term, a design refresh remains a part of the plan.
