Returning users (add/manage devices)

First-time users

You must be on an OHIO campus and connected to either the wired network or the main "OHIO University" Wi-Fi network to enroll. If you are physically unable to come to an OHIO campus, you will need to contact the IT Service Desk at 740-593-1222 to verify your identity before you will be allowed to enroll.

  1. Visit https://account.ohio.edu/multi-factor.
  2. Enter your OHIO ID and password.
  3. After successfully entering your password, follow the prompts on the login page to set up your preferred device(s) and phone number. (Detailed overview...)
  4. If you would like to enroll more than one device, follow the instructions below for "Returning users."

We strongly recommend using the Duo Security mobile app on a personal smart phone or tablet as your primary way of authenticating. The app is free, takes up very little space, uses very little data and is easy to use.

You also may wish to enroll a telephone number as a fallback option in case you are ever without your mobile device. Although the setup process refers to this option as a landline, all that matters is that the phone number be valid and accessible to you. If your cell phone does not support apps, you can enroll it in Duo as a landline. 

Please do not use telephone calls or texts as your primary way of completing a login. The university gets billed for every multi-factor call or text sent. If you must use a phone number, please make sure to check the "remember me for 30 days" box and try to limit your usage to 5 messages/calls per month.

Returning users: Add/Remove/Update a device

To enroll an additional device or to manage your existing devices:

  1. Go to your web browser's File menu and choose "New Private Window" or "New Incognito Window." This will force the Duo Security dialog to appear, even if you previously told it to remember you. 
  2. Using the window you opened in step 1, attempt to log into https://account.ohio.edu/multi-factor.
  3. Enter your OHIO ID and password.
  4. After successfully entering your password, click Settings in the Duo Security dialog and choose either "Add a new device" or "My Settings & Devices."  (If you have Duo set to automatically use your preferred device, you may have to press "Cancel" before the "Settings" button will be clickable.)

Mobile devices: A note on camera access

When you install Duo Security on a smartphone or tablet, the app will ask for permission to access to your device's camera. Approving this access will make it possible to finish enrolling your device by taking a picture of the unique QR code on the enrollment screen.

If you are not comfortable granting camera access, you can still enroll your device. You just will have to click a link to have Duo email you an activation code instead of taking a picture of the code.
