When our cover artist Herman Leonard graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University in 1947, it was the only university to offer a degree in Photography. Herman’s passion for jazz took him to Greenwich Village, where he photographed and developed friendships with many of the greats of jazz history, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. In his forward to Herman’s third book, Jazz, Giants, And Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard (Scala Publishers, 2006), Quincy Jones wrote: “When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman’s.” The Smithsonian claims 130 original Herman Leonard photographic prints in its permanent collection. Among Leonard’s many awards are the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Downbeat magazine (2006), and a Lucie Award for Lifetime Achievement in Portraiture (2008). Herman was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree by Ohio University in 2009.
