The School of Art + Design announces "2,3,4: Dimensional Photographies,” a call for photographic work that considers the object-ness of the photographic image, for exhibition in the Ohio University Art Gallery, Jan. 22- March 2, 2019. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 28.
Contemporary photography is embracing modes of production that move the print off the wall and into 3-D and 4-D realms, exemplified in part by a return to historical processes. Photography like this distinguishes itself from retinal, transmittable media by calling attention to its own materiality, its presence, its singularity and its unique identity as both image and object. A photograph may exist in relation to other objects, to its own display apparatus, to the space in which it lives; it may or may not have a stable position in time.
This exhibition looks to the contemporary practices of artists as photographers who are engaged with object-based production to engage in the ideas of reproduction implicit in the medium. We welcome submissions that offer a wide interpretation of photographic practice.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of events will be presented as part of the opening festivities including a lecture by juror Brittany Nelson. Nelson works with 19th century photographic chemistry techniques to address themes of feminist science fiction and queer abstraction. She received her MFA in photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and her Bachelor of Arts from Montana State University.
She is the recipient of a 2015 Creative Capital Grant in Visual Arts and a Theo Westenberger Foundation Grant for advancing women in the arts. Select solo exhibitions include PATRON Gallery (Chicago, Ill.), Morgan Lehman Gallery (New York City), David Klein Gallery (Detroit, Mich.), Sadie Halie Projects (Minneapolis, Minn.) and CRUSH Curatorial with Gabriela Vainsencher (New York City). Group exhibitions include Brooklyn Academy of Music (Brooklyn, New York), The Newcomb Art Museum (New Orleans, La.), The Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and the Houston Center for Photography (Houston, Texas). Nelson was a 2017 artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and her work has been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, WIRED, Collector Daily, Aesthetica and New Art Examiner. 2,3,4: Dimensional Photographies will be a presentation of Alternatives, a biennial juried exhibition organized by Ohio University’s MFA Photography + Integrated Media graduate candidates. Since its beginning in 1980, Alternatives has achieved national recognition for its leadership in forging new definitions in the medium by emphasizing the work of photographers in the conceptual forefront of the practice. The Alternatives Biennial is funded by the legacies of Clarence White — founder of the historically renowned Clarence White School of Photography in New York — and his son, Clarence White Jr., who re-established the school at Ohio University in 1948, creating the first degree-granting program in photography at a major university in the country.
