Learn more about OHIO’s Spring Commencement 2019 events, activities

Approximately 4,000 students are expected to participate in the Spring Commencement ceremonies Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4 at Ohio University’s Convocation Center.

The graduate commencement ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, for both master’s and doctoral degrees. Undergraduate ceremonies will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

Graduate Ceremony

Dr. Michael Sweeney is a professor and editor of Journalism History, the oldest journal of mass media history in the United States. He received his Ph.D. in Journalism from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in 1996, a Master’s of Journalism from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He worked as a reporter for National Geographic, a feature editor and copy editor at the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram and a reporter at the Springfield (Mo.) Daily News.

Undergraduate Ceremonies

Alex Sheen, the founder of “because I said I would,” will deliver Ohio University’s Spring 2019 undergraduate commencement speech. “because I said I would” is an international social movement and nonprofit dedicated to the betterment of humanity through promises made and kept. Sheen is a 2007 OHIO graduate from the College of Business with a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing.

Undergraduate degrees will be conferred Saturday, May 4.

There is no recessional for undergraduate ceremonies; graduates will depart the Convocation Center after their name has been read.

WHAT: Ohio University graduate and undergraduate Spring Commencement ceremony

WHEN: Friday, May 3, at 9:30 a.m.; doors will open at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at 9:30 a.m.; doors will open at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m.; doors will open at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tickets are not required, and the ceremony is expected to last approximately 2.5 hours. Guests may enter through the main doors off Richland Avenue.

WHERE: Convocation Center, Richland Avenue, Athens.

Parking for Spring Commencement is available in any regular non-metered, non-restricted space within a dark green or purple lot on campus. A map detailing these parking lots is available at: https://www.ohio.edu/athens/parking/.

Disability parking and a drop-off location for those with mobility concerns is located in Lot 128 at the Convocation Center and accessible from South Shafer Street. A state-issued disability placard or license plate is required for long term parking.

Please pay close attention to campus signage and event staff who will be on site prior to commencement to provide assistance and direction. Members of the Ohio University Police Department will also be on site to assist with parking.
